PRACTICAL-SAILOR INDUSTRY REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Glenn Henderson – naval designer, historically focused on performance sailing, brings a nice refresh with less weight and a sleeker, faster hull shape

  • Original model design dates back to the H386 introduced in 1996 – many improvements since then

  • Glenn made several performance changes and improvements when this H38 was introduced in 2004

  • Abundant beam (12’-11”) carries much of her spaciousness through the cockpit beam (10’-6”)

  • 6’ long benches are great for lounging under sail or at anchor

  • Additional pair of two-person rail seats further expand cockpit accommodations w/space for at least eight people

  • For performance enhancements, Glenn introduced a plumb bow for more waterline length and faster speeds

  • Moved the mast forward so that 2/3 of the boat is aft, 1/3 forward, for a larger mainsail, easier to handle genoa – resulting in more of a ‘mainsail-driven’ better balanced boat with less weather helm

  • Once the main is unfurled (port cabin top winch – done easily by hand), the rig is super easy to handle from the helm with large primary winches placed adjacent to the helm

  • This model reduced keel area and increased rudder area for faster sailing, better lift, and a more responsive rudder feel underway

  • She’s the fastest boat in-class compared to other brands according to reviewers

  • Even in a scant 4-5 knots of breeze, we still were making almost 3 knots of boat speed providing fun sailing in most any wind condition

  • 5-10 knots of wind brings you quickly up to 6-7 knots of boat speed

  • Spirited wind conditions brings you up well into 7.5-8 knot speeds
