INTRODUCTION:

November 2022 UPDATE! Back on market just now (11/2/22). Brand new water maker added. Brand new wind generator added. Several other thoughtful updates!

Over several decades of yacht sales, having been aboard thousands of yachts, and after hundreds of yachts sold by this point, the Tartan 4300 has become one of Erin’s and my favorite boats in this size and quality range.  It is truly a joy to sail and a true class leader.  Tim Jackett and his team at Tartan Yachts really just got so much right here.   In the mid-40’ range, this is a fast and powerful yacht.  Classic lines mixed with modern tech and amazingly thoughtful features make this boat a joy to sail on protected waters or crossing an ocean.    Some background on this particular boat and her travels.  Erin and I found ENDORPHIN on Lake Erie in Port Clinton, OH two years ago.  She had been a daysailer for the first owner since new.  With only 255 hours on the engine, with packing materials still in the oven and microwave, this first owner had actually never even slept aboard.  It was a lucky find for us and worth picking up the boat half a country away.  Erin and I brought the boat through Lake Erie, the Erie Canal to Albany and down the Chesapeake in the Fall of 2019 (engine hours 255 to 407 hours for this trip).  She has been in Deltaville since then with very light use, only another 40 hours since arriving on the Chesapeake.   She’s truly a magnificent yacht with amazing amenities above an below decks.

TARTAN YACHTS INTRODUCTION:

On the surface, the 4300 has all the design elements of classic American yacht design. Graceful sheerline, balanced overhangs, complimentary low coach roof, sweeping cockpit coamings and thoughtful convenience details on deck all give the 4300 a very classic profile. However, built within these stylish good looks are elements that take full advantage of Tartan's advanced construction practices providing excellent performance that is realized with minimum effort. A long and lean hull is fit with a choice of low center of gravity keels designed for great stability and sail carrying ability, and a carbon mast and "Pocket Boom" that are extremely stiff and strong. Tartan's overall commitment to advancing the art of yacht construction allows for an opulent interior while still maintaining impressive performance numbers. Her weight control results in a center of gravity that is lower than most cruising boats, improving performance and handling characteristics, even when loaded for extended passages. A modern classic in the making, the Tartan 4300 promises to be a head turner in any harbor.

HULL & DECK DESIGN:

The hull design of the 4300 continues the Tartan trend of long waterline, slippery entry forward, full and flat aft quarters and carefully sculpted balanced volume to produce a yacht that is easily driven and powerful for maximum performance. Her long waterline length relative to over-all length provides a high theoretical hull speed and the full aft sections allow the 4300 to surf and extend her sailing and motoring length to provide fast and exhilarating passage making.

By maintaining balanced volume in the hull, the 4300 heals predictably and evenly, unlike many extreme designs that develop bad manners under difficult conditions. Through optimized hull design the 4300 will extend your daily range, expanding the possibilities for weekend cruising and offering long daily passages offshore. Safety and comfort aboard require a thoughtfully designed deck and cockpit and as with past Tartans, the 4300 will excel in this area.

Wide and uncluttered sidedecks and a deep and secure cockpit are essential elements of the 4300. Additionally, the Tartan 4300 deck offers an abundance of ventilation through (14) opening port lights (every port on the boat opens in fact), (6) deck hatches and (4) dorade vents.   A convenient walk through transom with platform provides access for swimming or for stern boarding from a dinghy. The 4300 is fit with the best hardware from the best suppliers in the industry to assure that lines run free and easy. Trimmed with just the right amount of exterior teak, the 4300 is classic looking yet very modern yacht capable of going anywhere on the planet you might wish to go.

  • All hull penetrations made through solid E-Glass laminate “core windows” (sold core hull everywhere you would penetrate it for boat gear)

TARTAN'S CRUISE CONTROL RIG (CCR):

The Tartan 4300 has been designed with Tartan's "Cruise Control Rig", a super versatile system whose key features are a double spreader tapered carbon mast, self-tacking 100% jib, masthead 150% reacher and Tartan's carbon composite pocket boom. Her carbon rig is much lighter, stiffer and stronger than aluminum so the weight savings aloft provide the stability equivalent of (5) 200 lb crew members on the rail.  In short, you heal less due to the reduced moment arm of the rig aloft, the yacht remains more upright and is faster through the water with less air spilling out the top of the sails.  Upwind performance, between 30 and 75 degrees off the wind is incredible.  Don't be surprised to see 8.0-9.5 knots in some wind/sea conditions.

Aside from the benefits of the light but super strong carbon rig, upwind sailing is made easy by single sheet trimming for the jib.  In an enviable 'set it and forget it' mode, tacking is as easy as a turn of the wheel, the jib tends to itself and, with the traveler mounted on the coach roof, the main is free and clear from the cockpit. Offwind, roll up the self-tacker and unfurl the lightweight masthead reacher and the 4300 is canvassed for powerful reaching and downwind sailing. When its time to head for the harbor, the headsails are neatly rolled on the Harken furlers and the mainsail is conveniently dropped into the pocket boom and stowed with a zip of the sail cover, no sail ties needed, no muss or fuss. Simply stated, the Tartan 4300 makes performance cruising easy.

You may not find an easier yacht of this size or caliber that is so inviting of single handing when desired.  Electric primary winches and an electric cabin top winch allow you to handle the sails with a press of a button.  Caught with your pants down as the wind builds and too much headsail up?  Wrap the furling line around a winch and push a button.  Want to trim the big reacher in spirited conditions?  Just push a button...  You can winch handle your way through it, but this is LUXURY yachting.  Why would you?

ENGINE & MECHANICAL SYSTEMS:

When do you need horsepower?  Not when motoring on flat water!  It's always a big bonus when you buy a yacht that the original buyer put out the cash for an engine upgrade.  The extra horsepower is awesome when you're punching straight into choppy seas or when you're trying to get to that next bridge on the waterway or into port before dark.  Add the benefit of a larger engine not working as hard, not running as fast, and at a quieter RPM and you've got a winner on all fronts. Less stress means less maintenance means longer life for less money.
